MetaMask Password Forgotten — 6 Recovery Paths Ranked by Success Rate

You installed MetaMask years ago. You bought some ETH. You forgot the password. Now you can't get in. Here's what actually works, ranked from easiest to hardest.

Path 1 — You still have the 12-word secret recovery phrase

Success rate: 100%.

Uninstall MetaMask, reinstall it, choose "Import wallet," enter your 12-word phrase, set a new password. Done in five minutes. You don't need us. You don't need anyone.

If your phrase is written down somewhere — go find it before doing anything else.

Path 2 — The vault is still installed and you have password hints

Success rate: high with good hints. Low with none.

If MetaMask is still installed in your browser (even locked), your encrypted vault is on disk. We can extract it and run GPU-accelerated password recovery against it using hints you provide:

Length range
Character sets you tend to use
Words, dates, names, patterns
Old passwords you've reused elsewhere
Any partial recall

Modern GPUs test millions of candidates per second. If your password is memorable to you at all, we can usually find it in hours to days.

Critical: do NOT reinstall MetaMask over your existing profile. That can overwrite the vault. Instead: back up the profile folder first (see path 3).

Path 3 — You uninstalled MetaMask but didn't wipe your browser

Success rate: moderate. Time-sensitive.

The MetaMask vault lives in your browser's LevelDB store, in a folder named after MetaMask's extension ID (nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn on Chromium browsers). Uninstalling the extension often does NOT immediately delete this data.

Immediately stop using the affected browser profile.
If comfortable, back up: ~/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Local Extension Settings/nkbihfbeogaeaoehlefnkodbefgpgknn/ (macOS Chrome path shown; adjust for OS/browser).
We can extract the vault from this folder and run password recovery as in Path 2.

Every hour you use the browser normally, this folder gets cleaned or overwritten. Speed matters.

Path 4 — You wiped the drive or reinstalled the OS

Success rate: low. Depends heavily on hardware.

HDD (magnetic): deleted data often survives for months. Forensic imaging + LevelDB reconstruction is feasible.
SSD with TRIM enabled: typically wiped within hours after deletion. Very difficult.
NVMe on modern OS: effectively unrecoverable after normal wipe.

If the drive still exists, unplug it and don't use it again. Send it to us for forensic assessment. We'll be honest if it's not worth attempting.

Path 5 — You have Ledger/Trezor connected to MetaMask

Success rate: 100%.

If your MetaMask accounts were only "views" of your Ledger or Trezor, your keys are on the hardware wallet, not in MetaMask. You don't need to recover the MetaMask password at all — install fresh MetaMask on any device and re-connect the hardware wallet. Balances reappear.

Path 6 — Nothing above

Success rate: 0%. Do not fall for scams.

If you have no seed phrase, no vault file, no drive, no hardware wallet — the funds are gone. No service can recover them. Anyone claiming otherwise is stealing from you. See our post on how wallet recovery really works.

Do not, under any circumstances

Do not type your seed phrase into any website, form, or chat — including "MetaMask support" and including us.
Do not send anyone a "gas fee" or "unlock fee" to release your funds.
Do not accept DMs from anyone claiming to be "MetaMask support" or offering recovery.
Do not reinstall or reset MetaMask over your existing profile until you've backed it up.

Can you unlock MetaMask without the seed? Only by recovering the password against the encrypted vault, which requires the vault file (on-disk data). Not by "resetting" it.
